Shelter Driver

This document is intended to describe the general duties required for this position.  It is not intended to serve as an exhaustive list of duties, skills, and responsibilities.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Shelter Driver is responsible for safely transporting residents to various appointments and locations.  The driver also does pickups for food donations and delivers them to the shelter.  The Driver ensures the van is clean.  During non-driving hours, the Shelter Driver performs the duties of a Shelter Aide.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:

  • Responsible for a safe clean environment of care that meets with the standard of safety and cleanliness for staff and consumers.
  • Achieves a high level of client/resident satisfaction.
  • Responsible for ensuring those services comply with Affordable Housing Alliance’s policies and procedures.
  • Transport clients as needed and/or pick up donations from various locations.
  • Carry boxes of donated items and stock/store items appropriately
  • Respond promptly to all client questions, concerns, and complaints.
  • Assist with the daily living needs of shelter residents, including access to phones, food, medications, & personal care items.
  • Complete house security checks as assigned on your shift.
  • Maintain client files and other record keeping as required. All paperwork should be completed by the end of each shift.
  • Take appropriate steps to deal with emergencies, and maintain the safety of all residents in conjunction with the agency policies
  • Any other duties assigned by the Shelter Manager

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of related work experience
  • Must have the capacity to deal with diverse clients with various levels of needs.
  • Must have a valid NJ Driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must have a current TB Vaccination
  • Hepatitis B and MMR Vaccinations are highly recommended
  • Holidays and evenings are required
  • Ability to perform physical tasks: move objects, bend, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to see road signs and navigation devices

UPON EMPLOYMENT:

  • Ability to pass a drug test.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • If required to drive an agency vehicle, an NJ driver’s license is in good standing with no more than six (6) points.
