Universal Service Fund (USF)
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has created the Universal Service Fund (USF) program to help make electric and natural gas bills more affordable for limited income households.
The USF program provides monthly credits for 12 months based on energy burden and income level, and may also provide arrearage forgiveness for past due balances through the Fresh Start Program. Starting October 1st, 2024, the Fresh Start Program is available to customers once every five years.
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Unable to pay for your heating or cooling? You may qualify for assistance!
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income residential customers pay for heating and cooling bills, even if heat is included as part of rent payments. LIHEAP provides assistance for all types of heat, and may also provide emergency assistance funds for heater and water heater repairs. LIHEAP also provides grants in the winter so that eligible households can pay their heating bills and continue using heating equipment. The benefit amount depends on the number of people in the household, geographical location, and household gross income.
Applications for LIHEAP in New Jersey are accepted between October 1st, 2024, and June 30th, 2025.
Please Note: the AHA can only accept LIHEAP/USF applications from Monmouth County residents. You can apply using using this link or click here to locate a LIHEAP/USF agency in your county.
